About Akihabara

Akihabara (秋葉原, “Akiba”) is Tokyo’s center of anime, manga, games and electronics — and the birthplace of the maid café. Around the Chuo-dori main street you’ll find dozens of maid cafés and concept cafés, from bright family-friendly cafés open in the afternoon to cozy bars that open at night.

  • Access: JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Sobu lines, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Tsukuba Express all stop at Akihabara Station. About 4 minutes from Tokyo Station by JR
  • Best time: maid cafés are busiest on weekend afternoons; bar-style concept cafés get lively after 7 pm
  • Good to know: on Sunday afternoons part of Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian zone. Street flyers for maid cafés are common — choosing a place in advance is easier
