A concept café — “con-cafe” (コンカフェ) in Japanese — is a café or bar built around a theme, where the staff dress up and stay in character. Maid cafés are the most famous kind, but there are many more kawaii worlds to step into.
💰 Kawaii Check lists 15 places for this topic. The estimated total for one hour (set charge + one drink, including service charge and tax) ranges from ¥880 to ¥3,267.
Popular concept café themes
- Maid: the classic Akihabara style — “Welcome home, master!”
- Idol: the staff are aspiring idols, sometimes with live singing
- School uniform, nurse, shrine maiden and other costume themes
- Fantasy, gothic, yami-kawaii (“sick-cute”) and anime-style worlds
How a concept café works
You usually sit at a counter and chat with the staff (called “cast”). Most places charge a set fee for a fixed time plus at least one drink. Extras include drinks you buy for the cast and “cheki” instant photos.
Concept cafés in Akihabara often open in the afternoon; those in Kabukicho are more bar-like and stay open late. Alcohol is served at many places, and the legal drinking age in Japan is 20.
Concept café vs. maid café vs. girls bar
- Maid café: one type of concept café, with a maid theme. Often family-friendly
- Concept café: any theme; can be café-style or bar-style
- Girls bar: a bar with no particular theme where you drink and chat with female bartenders across the counter

Frequently asked questions
Q. What does “con-cafe” mean?
“Con-cafe” (コンカフェ) is short for “concept café”: a café or bar where the staff dress according to a theme, such as maids, idols or school uniforms, and entertain guests in character.
Q. Is a concept café the same as a hostess club?
No. At a concept café you usually talk with the staff across a counter, and they don’t sit next to you. Hostess clubs (kyabakura) are a different, more expensive type of business that Kawaii Check does not list.
Q. How much does a concept café cost?
Expect a set charge for a fixed time (often 60 minutes) plus at least one drink. Drinks for the staff, cheki photos, service charges and tax can add more. Kawaii Check shows an estimated total for one hour for every place.
Q. Where are concept cafés in Tokyo?
Akihabara has the most concept cafés and maid cafés. Kabukicho in Shinjuku has many bar-style concept cafés that stay open late. Ikebukuro is another popular area.
